Firearm Storage & Safety Awareness Campaign

North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS)

Role: User Experience Designer

I had the opportunity to lead the UX Design process for a critical project in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS). The goal of NC Safe was to create a gun safety campaign and website to raise awareness about the proper securement of firearms.

This was a fast-paced project that required careful consideration of multiple factors, including development constraints, tight timelines, and the sensitivity of the topic.

Challenge

The Challenge: The NCDPS needed a brand-new campaign website to educate the public on the responsible and safe handling of firearms.

Key Objectives: Our primary goal was to design a website that effectively communicated the message of gun safety while ensuring ease of use and understanding.

Process

Our team conducted a series of activities to kick off the design and development of the NC Safe website.

  • User-Centered Approach: We began by conducting research, which included stakeholder interviews and receiving feedback from subject matter experts.

  • Content Brainstorming: Collaborating with various departments, we brainstormed and refined content for the campaign website.

  • Information Architecture: I developed a structured information architecture to ensure that the content was logically organized for users to navigate easily.

  • Wireframing: I led the creation of wireframes, ensuring a "simple, clean, and modern" look that would resonate with the target audience.

Website Content Brainstorm

  • At the beginning of the project, I collaborated with multiple departments, such as the writing and content teams to help brainstorm content for the campaign and website.

  • I demonstrated initiative by contributing ideas from the project's inception and driving their implementation throughout the design and development process.

  • Given the sensitivity of the topic, I ensured that the content and design were approached with utmost care to maintain a respectful and informative tone.

Client Presentation & Buy-In

When I presented the wireframes to the NCDPS team, the clients were impressed by the simplicity, cleanliness, and modern design, which aligned with their vision for the campaign website. This positive feedback facilitated swift buy-in, enabling the project to progress to higher fidelity mockups and development stages at high speed.

Results

The final campaign website was well-received by NCDPS and played a pivotal role in raising awareness about gun safety by educating the public about responsible firearm handling. This project demonstrates my ability to lead fast-moving projects, collaborate with diverse teams, and create user-centered designs while handling sensitive topics.
